Good news! As of February 1, 2014, the City of Spanish Fort protection class improved to a protection class 3 ISO rating! Spanish Fort is one of only 49 cities to receive this rating in Alabama. The town’s fire department website said, “Residents and businesses should notify their insurance agents at renewal time to ensure the correct rating is being applied. Read our Press Release here.” Before 2/1/2014, the Spanish Fort’s protection class was at a class 5 ISO rating.
How Spanish Fort Protection Class Improved
There was a survey conducted by ISO that examined 3 areas of Spanish Fort: 1) 911 response, 2) the water systems, 3) and the fire departments. The 911 group is graded by receiving and handling emergency phone calls. The water systems are graded by the amount of fire hydrants throughout the town. The fire department is graded on trucks, equipment, personnel, training, facilities, and pre-incident planning. These 3 areas were graded and improved from a protection class 5 to a 3.
How Protection Class Effects Insurance Rates
Lower protection classes mean less risk, which also mean cheaper insurance rates. Note that to qualify for a cheaper price your home in Spanish Fort must be within 5 miles of the fire department AND be within 1,000 feet of a fire hydrant. If your home is over 5 miles of the fire department but within 1,000 feet, your home is a protection class 9, but if your home is more than 5 miles from the fire department and over 1,000 feet, your home is a protection class 10.
